My friend got me the new three disc remastered super awesome edition of Wizard of Oz, and I am definately enjoying it. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. The original books I never quite got into - I much preferred the Narnia books (by the way, I saw it, and will post my review at a later time, after I see Brokeback Mountain later today). But the movie itself is one of the first movies I have a solid memory of seeing in the theater (when it was re-released! I'm not THAT old). You know how when you see movies when you're a kid, they seem familiar, or you just remember bits - I remember the entire experience of going to see it, and just being entranced by it. I went to Disneyland a lot as a kid (dad worked at the hospital they had a contract with and got cheap season passes), and I would pretend that when I went there, I was going to Oz.
It's very different now, of course - I haven't had a genuinely good time at Disneyland in years, because they delight in tearing up classic attractions and remaking them, plus the fact that it's always so horribly busy you can't breath in the park, much less enjoy yourself (please ignore the fact that I am considering working there to pick up some extra hours before next semester starts).
Anyway, I still absolutely adore the movie. If anyone ever remakes it I might have to choke some bitches up in here. I had the VHS copy that came out for the re-release with this little book attached to the cover, but I'd never gotten around to getting the generic DVD copy - when I found out about this edition I was just overjoyed. I was going to wait until after Christmas to get it, but I stopped by my friend's work to give her a card, and she had it for me! I was so overjoyed. I've watched it about four times (watching it again right now! I'm at the Scarecrow's entrance as I type this...).
The remastering is absolutely breathtaking. No scratches or dirt specks or skips, and everything's clean and bright and fixed up - you can see the texture on the Scarecrow's face and all the rivets on the Tin Man's face. It's amazing. The sound is all fixed as well. The DVD has so much extra stuff - the remastered version and the "normal" version so you can watch both and be amazed, a special on all the actors and actresses, Angela Lansbury reading the original book with illustrations, a special on how they remastered it - and that's just on one disc. There's threeeee! I haven't gotten to the other two yet. PLUS, there's two booklets full of poster reproductions, including a reproduction of the program from the premier.
*happy puddle of fangirl goo*
Aside from that - I'm seeing Brokeback Mountain today with some friends, and I think later I get to meet my dear friend's boyfriend. She's been so happy with him and I can't wait to poke him with a stick for myself. ;)

First-person games
Dec. 11th, 2005 | 04:28 pm
I don't know how many people on my friends list role play online or are familiar with it - I play text-based games done through journal functions. I used to do a variety of games, but now I stick more or less exclusively to first-person games.
Pros about first person games:
01) You are generally allowed to have one liners, and use denote action and thought easily (Like "I'm so bored today. *sigh*"), which cuts down on the amount of writing and reading. Why do I like this?
01A) I spend several hours a day writing my own original work, and it's usually in (broadcast/tv/film) script format. I consider this work. During my leisure time, I don't want to be sitting there stressing out over if my grammar is correct and writing essays about Harry Potter.
01B) I enjoy a high amount of interaction in my games, and it's much easier to have a high amount of interaction when you don't have to write in third person with a large amount of detail. If I had to write in third person and give each comment layers and layers of detail, I might get four or five comments back and forth with someone in fifteen minutes. With first person, you can get in about twenty in fifteen minutes. This allows people to interact with more characters, get more done, develop things faster, and, IMO, have more fun.
02) You avoid a lot of god-moding and extra work. During most third-person games, characters who interact with each other regularly often take their conversations to AIM so that things can be done quicker (see above!). After, one person has to re-type the entire conversation in third person and post it to the game. Oftentimes this leads to Person A editing in a lot of emotions or thoughts into Person B's characters, which can get very frustrating.
03) More people can interact with each other without having quite as much difficulty breaking into cliques and the like. I know from experience that people who have similar writing styles tend to play together, and if someone doesn't like the way you punctuate your sentences, they won't be so eager to start playing with you, and in most games, it's a pain in the ass to join in and requires essay-length attempts over and over again. It's not a rule, of course, but from my experience, most first-person games make it much easier for new people to get involved because all you have to do is amble up and say "Hi!"
04) This is more just a pet peeve of mine - in a lot of third-person games, it's hard to have a lot of action going on, so there's mostly talking between a small amount of characters. This leads to the games revolving around people hooking up, dating, having sex, etc. I hate that. In fast-paced games you can do plenty of other things much easier.
Cons about first-person games:
01) The lack of intense writing often leads to players who have little to no grasp on how to write. Most first-person games have quality control standards for who they let in, however. The game I mod does have a few questionable writers, but they've been in the game longer than I have since I only became moderator when the previous mod left. Due to this I am not about to kick them out (one of them is pretty incoherent but has gotten much better as the game's gone on - and she's hilarious, so it's totally worth trying to figure out what the hell she's saying). Also, the *action* stuff is about as grammatically incorrect as you can get, so if that sort of thing bothers you, the game's got to be hell.
02) It can get very confusing. Posts can go up to three hundred comments in under an hour if you've got all the players on line involved in something, and to try and keep track of that can be a huge headache.
03) Most people don't like them. It's often very difficult to get active, coherent players, because most of those sort are off playing third-person games, and the people who "type leik dis" are going to apply for the first-person ones, thinking they'll have an easier time getting in (Not in MY games, thank you very much!).
In other news, my paid account is expiring in about a week, and I don't think I'm going to pay for it again. It was nice, but I did not use the icons enough to justify paying for it.

1. Choose a fandom
2. List ten pairings you like
3. List ten pairings you don't like
This is utterly pointless but I am doing it anyway because I am bored. I should be making icons for sw_100, but oh well. Maybe later. I got very, very lazy and did not get up until 3 PM today (?), so now have to stay awake until tomorrow night to properly fix my schedule. I might re-read OotP and play hours of Nintendogs. We shall see.

Dear Solicitor:
Do not hang up huge signs everywhere saying your petition is about furthering breast cancer research when it's really about legalizing kill on sight border patroll, dropping the price of cigarettes, and has a thing about maaaaybe putting aside a scientist or two for breast cancer. By doing this you risk being assaulted with my can of Pringles. Do you undersand?
Thanks.
- MQ
Also.
Why is there more Viktor/Ron than Viktor/Hermione? Het won't burn! I promise!

Some friends and I decided to hit Disneyland today, since an employee offered to hook us up with free passes. I wasn't entirely in the mood for going, as I grew up in the Anahiem area and got burned out on the park early in highschool (these days I am all about Knott's Berry Farm - less expensive, better rides, better atmosphere, better food, etc) - but hey. Free and friends, so no harm, right?
I chipped a tooth eating (it chipped against another tooth. Grrr!!!!). Badly. I thought it would be okay, I was just really pissed because it was sharp enough to cut the inside of my mouth so I figured I'd go to the ER of my dad's hospital and get it taken care of ASAP. I decided to stop and buy some mint chocolate fudge on my way out, because damnit, not even two in the afternoon and I was already having a bad day and hell if I didn't DESERVE some fudge. In the process of purchasing my calorie-laden delight, it hit me. The pain. The horrible, horrible pain.
So now I'm back, curled up in my chair on half a bottle of advil.
Ddaaaammmnnniiiitttt.

Thanksgiving
Nov. 24th, 2005 | 05:57 pm
I am very glad to be at an age where I can ditch family gatherings. One half of my family are of foreign decent and really don't see a point to the holiday (neither do I) except that they get the day off work and there's sporting events on the telly. Sadly, this side of the family is far too far away to get together with. The other half of my family is partly ambiguous on the holiday, and partly hardcore about it. I think it is funny because the hardcore part of my family is heavily mixed with native Americans. I'm from everywhere! :P It's very scary to hear my grandmother, who in her youth looked like an Indian Princess (I AM NOT PC NEENER NEENER) out of a Peter Pan story, rant about how much she loves the Republicans. This woman has a George Bush calander!
The hardcore half of my family is Californian by way of Texas, and has been making holiday seasons horrid for myself and my brother. My father, who's part of the foreigners who don't give a crap, generally works over Thanksgiving because it's holiday pay and he doesn't care, which leaves my brother and I with The Crazies. This always ends in shouting matches, threats to be removed from so-and-so's will, how so-and-so is going to hell, making fun of the married-in Aunt because she's overweight... etc. It always ends in someone crying. Sometimes me. I am just sorry I couldn't get my brother out of there, but he's a wee lad of sixteen.
So today I blew them off and went to Denny's with a friend. :P We're going to see Walk The Line in a little while (hah! More and more people are coming with us! Every five minutes someone new is going! The power of Johnny Cash compels you!). Today, I am thankful for free sides of hash browns and Joaquin Pheonix. Mmmmmmm.

But I did see the new Harry Potter movie, so I had to stop by and say Yay! for Snape. That is all.

In other news, I really hate the people on cf_hardcore. Why can't people who don't like or want kids just be ... SANE? I don't want kids, and I don't like children all that much, but I'm not batshit crazy. Why is it so hard for people to stop being asshats on the internet?
